UV Exposure on the Golf Course: What Every Golfer Should Know
Golfers accumulate more than a billion hours of direct UV exposure every year on U.S. courses — and most have no idea that standard golf cart windshields do almost nothing to block harmful UVA rays. In a country where 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, that matters. This page explains what the science says, what dermatologists recommend, and how Evolution's patented UV-blocking windshields fit into a complete sun-protection strategy.
What the Research Says About Golfers and UV Exposure
The data on golfers and sun exposure is sobering. A typical 18-hole round takes 4 to 5 hours — almost all of it spent under direct sunlight, often during the highest UV-index hours of the day. Multiplied across the more than 25 million golfers in the United States, the result is staggering: research published in the National Library of Medicine estimates that golfers in the U.S. accumulate over one billion hours of UV exposure annually, with no formal sun-protection program built into the sport.
What that exposure adds up to over a lifetime is well-documented:
- The American Academy of Dermatology reports that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
- The Skin Cancer Foundation has identified outdoor sports — including golf — as a leading driver of cumulative UV damage in adults over 40.
- UVA radiation, the longer-wavelength UV that penetrates deepest into skin, is linked to premature aging, wrinkling, and the most dangerous forms of skin cancer including melanoma.
- UVB radiation, the shorter-wavelength UV, is the primary cause of sunburn and a major contributor to non-melanoma skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Most golfers know to wear sunscreen and a hat. Far fewer know that the windshield in front of them — the one piece of equipment they're sitting behind for hours at a time — is letting almost all of that UV through.
Read & Understand UV Index
The UV Index provides a simple scale to help you understand the intensity of ultraviolet radiation and take appropriate precautions. Here’s a breakdown of the categories:
- Low (1-2): Minimal risk. Most people can safely enjoy outdoor activities with basic sun protection like SPF 15.
- Moderate (3-5): Moderate risk. Use SPF 30 sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and consider staying in the shade during midday.
- High (6-7): High risk of harm from unprotected exposure. Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and limit sun exposure, especially during peak hours.
- Very High (8-10): Very high risk. Use SPF 50+, wear UV-protective clothing, and avoid being outdoors during midday hours.
- Extreme (11+):Extreme risk. Avoid sun exposure if possible, and take maximum protective measures, including sunscreen, clothing, and seeking shade.
Why Standard Golf Cart Windshields Fail You
Most golf cart windshields on the market today are made from extruded polycarbonate or basic acrylic — materials chosen for cost, not for long-term performance. The result is a product that fails on three fronts:
- Inadequate UV protection. While some standard windshields advertise "UV-resistant" properties, this typically means the material itself is treated to resist yellowing — not that it blocks UV from reaching the people behind it. Independent testing has shown that many uncoated polycarbonate windshields transmit 30% or more of incoming UVA radiation directly through to the driver and passengers.
- Rapid degradation. Without an advanced protective film, polycarbonate yellows, hazes, and scratches within 12–18 months of regular use. Owners often report visible cloudiness, reduced visibility, and the need for full replacement within two seasons.
- Outdated installation systems. Traditional clip-on or bolt-mounted windshields require tools, modifications, and often two people to install. Replacement is even more painful — and many systems don't allow easy removal for cleaning, storage, or seasonal use.
Evolution Windshields was designed to solve all three problems at once. Our windshields are built from premium ACRYLITE® FF clear acrylic and integrate Windshield Protection Film (WPF) — the same advanced film technology used in automotive and aerospace applications — to block 99% of incoming UVA and UVB rays. They're DOT-stamped (AS-5-MFF-10-4 DOT 78), engineered to maintain optical clarity for years, and install in minutes with our patent-pending MagMount™ tool-free magnetic mounting system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Just like it's important to differentiate between different types of sunscreen, many windshields that may claim UV protection aren't sufficiently protecting you or your vehicle. In fact, most only block part of the spectrum — and only for a short time. Standard polycarbonate and acrylic windshields degrade quickly in sunlight — yellowing, hazing, and losing optical clarity within 1-2 years.
The Evolution Difference
Our film-based protection lasts 3–5 years under normal use, with proper care extending its lifespan, maintaining optical clarity and full-spectrum UV defense — no yellowing, no haze, and no guesswork.
Let your eyes be the proof. A year-old windshield that truly blocked harmful UV wouldn’t be cloudy, cracked, or worn. Look at yours and you'll see the difference.

WHAT IS UV INDEX?
The UV Index is a global standard for measuring the strength of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation at a specific place and time. Developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and meteorological agencies, it helps people understand the risk of overexposure to UV rays, which can harm the skin and eyes.
The scale ranges from 1 (Low) to 11+ (Extreme), with higher numbers indicating a greater potential for harm. A higher UV Index means you need to take extra precautions to protect yourself, especially during peak sunlight hours. By understanding the UV Index, you can make informed decisions to safeguard your skin and overall health every day.

Our windshields are currently compatible with 2004-Current Club Car Precedent-Onward Tempo golf carts and Yamaha Drive 2 only.
If you own a different make or model, please email sales@evolutionwindshields.com with your cart’s specifications. We’re actively expanding our compatibility and will do our best to get you a UV-blocking shield that fits.
Not sure which model you have? Just reach out—we’re happy to help confirm compatibility.
The MagMount™ system requires a steel surface to function properly. Since most aluminum frames are non-magnetic, the windshield will not attach unless a steel plate is installed.
If you own an aluminum cart and are interested in UV protection, please reach out to us at sales@evolutionwindshields.com — we’re happy to help find the right solution for you!
We aim to get your order to you as quickly as possible. Most orders are processed and shipped within 1–3 business days. Once shipped, delivery typically takes:

The UV-blocking performance is designed to last 3–5 years under normal use. With proper care, it can last even longer. To extend its lifespan, we recommend using XPEL’s WPF RESTORE Spray, available on our website. Regular maintenance helps keep the film performing at its best while preserving clarity and appearance.
Thanks to our MagMount™ system, installation is quick and easy with no tools required. Simply align the top magnets with the front struts of the golf cart and gently lower the windshield until the magnets engage. Keep the lower section up for airflow, or fold it down for full protection.
